Energy Access Ventures attended the gala dinner hosted by Schneider Electric, one of EAV’s limited partners, in Nairobi on 28th July 2017. This event brought together various business and industry leaders, including EAV's portfolio companies, to share their common interests in the energy space.

The Africa Solar and Energy Storage Congress (ASEC) was held on 27th and 28th June 2017 in Nairobi. This congress brought together a broad range of participants including governments, utilities, project developers, start-ups, investors, energy storage product manufacturers and consulting firms. This event aimed at discussing the opportunities, challenges and solutions for solar and energy storage development in the African market.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) and the African Guarantee Fund for Small and Medium Enterprises (AGF) hosted the first Green Finance Conference in Nairobi on 21st June 2017.

Ravinder Sikand spoke at the first Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) Conference, which was jointly hosted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). The conference was held in Nairobi on 22nd and 23rd May 2017.

First, some facts.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, on average, industry generates $700 of GDP per capita in Africa, less than a third of Latin America’s output ($2,500 per capita) and barely a fifth of East Asia’s ($3,400 per capita).
In EU, only 30% of electricity produced is used by households. In the US, it’s currently 21% c. 15% in 1949. Only 25% of these households are rural i.e. only 5.25% of electricity generated is consumed by rural households. In 2014 in China 12% of electricity produced was used by households
62% of Sub-Saharan Africans are rural – c. 500 million people. By contrast, 25% of EU citizens, 18% of Americans, 7% of Japanese and 44% of Chinese live in rural areas.

We often get asked about the challenges of doing business in Africa, of which there are indeed many.
However, one simple one that often gets overlooked is size. At Energy Access Ventures, we believe we do business in “the Africas”.
